Sunnyside Wellness Centre Campaign

The Wellness Centre Vision

Sunnyside Foundation raised the bar for healthy aging in our community with the opening of the new Sunnyside Wellness Centre in 2010. Our goal is to promote the physical, mental and social health of older adults living in Waterloo Region.

More Than Just Exercise

The Wellness Centre is a centralized, one-stop facility promoting healthy living through:

  • Supervised exercise programs in a fitness centre with equipment designed specifically for older adults.
  • Health professionals such as registered massage therapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors foot care nurses, dental hygienist and physiotherapists provide individual or group treatment.
  • A therapeutic spa including basic esthetic services and water therapy.
  • Education programs on health, wellness and nutrition-related topics.
  • Social areas in which to relax and talk to others.

Why We Need a Wellness Centre

Everyone wants to enjoy a healthy, vibrant life as long as possible. Research shows that social interaction and health education reduce isolation and the associated risk of depression.

The Sunnyside Wellness Centre removes barriers to participation with a comfortable, accessible location for older adults in the community and the residents and clients of Sunnyside. The centre helps older adults maintain as much independence as possible with an improved quality of life.

New Views On Aging

  • Today's seniors and baby boomers have a growing interest in healthy aging. They know an active lifestyle will enhance their quality of life and help maintain their independence.
  • Regular and moderate exercise can reduce the drawbacks of aging and risk of disease.
  • Healthy aging can reduce reliance on the health care system and need for long-term care.

A Personal Story

By Josie Ince

"I have congenital dislocation of both hips, which means I do not have a socket in either hip. All that is holding me together are muscle tissues.

Since I now work out in the Sunnyside Wellness Centre three times a week, my yearly health report was excellent.

My blood pressure is down, my cholesterol is very good, I feel so good, in fact, when I come out of the Centre I always feel like I am walking on air. I am now walking much better and find I can stand longer.

We are so fortunate to have such a Centre just for us seniors.

I am very grateful to the Sunnyside Foundation and to all the people who have donated to create this Centre"
